SKATEBOARDING
IN SANFORD
It's a quiet summer
evening. You've spent a lot of pocket money and time on your skate board.
Why not go for a few flips around the park? Well, if you live in Sanford
you probably won't find a park to flip in. Skateboards are not illegal
but they might as well be in the minds of some.
You are likely to
find yourself behind a downtown office building or a parking lot of some
company that's closed for the weekend. There are holes in the pavement,
lumps of gravel and debris as well as rough terrain to ride your very small
wheels across. So - why not just build a skateboard park? This writer
has been asking that question for several years now. Dating back to the
early 1900's and transcending the terms of office of several mayors, there
still isn't a good, safe place for riders to take their boards for a spin.
A few good ideas have been suggested by various persons over the years
and, the city even stated that land was being made available and the park
should be forthcoming soon. Things take a long time in government but,
the kids keep getting older, taller, bigger and less and less interested
in skateboarding because of other responsibilities.
Maybe it's a job
for the private sector. Maybe it's a task for major land owners that can
afford to be kind and sympathetic to the needs of the young. Then again,
maybe I'm just a dreamer. What ever it takes we need to take the time and
do it. Being afraid of the big liability insurance issue is only an excuse
to keep the kids sitting in front of the TV set with a video game controller
in their hands.
Since Sanford Quest
is read all over the world, I would like very much to ask our readers that
live in towns and cities that have skateboard parks to e-mail us with information
about your park and the rules that govern it's operation. Is it a public
park and owned by the city? Is it privately owned for use by everyone?
Let us know so that we can try to build the best park possible in our town
too.
